Vale Joe Marzano

Basketball ACT (BACT) wishes to acknowledge the life of Joe Marzano, who sadly passed away on 8 January 2020. Joe, and his family, ran the canteens at both the Natex and Belconnen basketball stadiums for more than  20 years. The Marzano family were an integral part of the BACT community and their contribution was recognised with Joe being awarded life membership in 1995. Born in 1940, Joe emigrated to Australia from Italy with his parents and siblings in 1956.  Joe and his beloved wife made Canberra their home and raised a family of seven children.   Joe worked a number of jobs, including running his own café for many years and a stint in the public service. For a while he had his day job and the family ran the basketball canteen every night and through the weekend days until the centre moved to Belconnen, where he opened the takeaway through the day as well. They were a major part of the basketball community – the family always had a smile and it the children transitioned into adulthood watching basketball and providing for the basketball community. MEDIA RELEASE  Tuesday 7 January 2020  Basketball ACT Join Canberra’s Sporting Community in Bushfire Fund-Raising Efforts  Basketball ACT (BACT) have announced they are joining forces with the region’s sporting clubs and associations, to support the communities directly impacted by the recent bushfires.  #WeAreOne - draws together major sporting teams, clubs and associations from the Canberra region together to raise money and provide support to the volunteers, families and communities across the NSW South Coast, Monaro region and Southern Inland. With many of our basketball family affected by the bushfires, BACT CEO – David Simpson said “We are honoured to come together with so many amazing teams, clubs and associations from our region as part of #WeAreOne, to raise funds for those impacted by the bushfires, and are well underway in planning how we can collaborate and coordinate our efforts, and contribute to this amazing initiative.” BACT will join the Canberra Raiders, Brumbies Rugby, UC Capitals, Hockey ACT and the Canberra Chill, Canberra Cavalry, CBR Brave, Cricket ACT and the ACT Meteors, Capital Football and Canberra United FC, Tennis ACT, Netball ACT and the GWS Giants, as part of #WeAreOne. Sport Aus, Basketball Australia and 3x3Hustle have partnered to create a new fun and exciting program utilising Basketball to facilitate people finding their 30 minutes in a non-traditional basketball setting!
